Waging War on Fear: Strategies to Overcome a Scary World
by Betty Parker
Here is an excerpt of Betty Parker’s book...
“Do you remember the times when you were deeply engrossed in a particular task and didn’t pay much attention to what was going on around you? You were focused solely on what you were doing at the moment and blocked out your surroundings. Then out of nowhere someone jumped out of the shadows and roared at you or even yelled, “Boo!” Depending on how crafty they were, they probably caught you completely off guard and scared the grits out of you. To them, it was hilarious. And after the shock wore off, you, too, found that it was funny. You were shaky with relief after you realized that it was only a prank. But boy, were you ever frightened when it happened!
“We’ve all been there, and we’ve even pulled the same prank on someone else. Remember what you had to do to plan it? You had to hide. You had to be very quiet. You surveyed your target closely to determine the best time to strike. And you relished the outcome. What makes such a prank most effective is being able to catch the person totally off guard. Timing is critical because you must find the moment when the person is most vulnerable and totally unsuspecting.
“That’s how life comes at us sometimes. We can be going about our daily routines, caught up in the monotony of it all, and then, “Boo!” From out of nowhere, tragedy strikes, and our lives suddenly spiral out of control. We are immediately bewildered, upset, and—most of all—scared. We don’t know what to do. And in many cases, we soon discover that we can do very little. We are vulnerable.”
